Why we rate it

Freeze and Shine is the finishing spray for styles that have to last: occasion hair, updos and blow-dries that need to survive a breezy day on the seafront. It's a non-aerosol spray with a firm, long-lasting hold and a high shine, it stands up to humidity, and it stays touchable and brushable rather than crisp. You control the strength: mist from further away for a softer hold, or build it up in light layers where you need more. It suits thick and coarse hair particularly well, and it's great for wet looks. If you want soft, movable hair all day, Soft Spray is the gentler option.

  • Firm, long-lasting hold that stays brushable
  • High-shine, touchable finish
  • Resists humidity for all-day hold
  • Non-aerosol; build it up in light layers
  • Colour-safe

Stylist’s tip

Hold the bottle about 20–30 cm away and mist in light layers, section by section. Several fine mists give more even hold than one heavy spray.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray discontinued?

No. Freeze and Shine Super Spray is still part of the Paul Mitchell range, and paul-mitchell.co.uk lists it in 75 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 litre (checked 18 October 2026). In the UK it's sold as the '50% VOC' formula.

In stock with us now in 75 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre and the 3.78 litre gallon.

How strong is the hold of Freeze and Shine?

It's Paul Mitchell's maximum-hold finishing spray, with a high shine, and it resists humidity yet stays touchable and brushes out cleanly. For a softer result, mist from further away; for more hold, add light layers rather than one heavy coat.

Is Freeze and Shine good for fine hair?

It works on all hair types, but Paul Mitchell recommends it most for thick or coarse hair. On fine hair, mist it from further away in one light layer so the style holds without feeling heavy; Extra Body Firm Hairspray is the maximum-hold spray made for fine hair.

What does '50% VOC' mean on Freeze and Shine?

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, the ingredients in a hairspray that evaporate as it dries, and '50% VOC' means they make up half of the formula. It's the version of Freeze and Shine sold in the UK, and the same one paul-mitchell.co.uk sells.

Which size of Freeze and Shine is best value?

The 3.78 litre gallon works out lowest, at £4.39 per 100 ml, followed by the 1 litre at £4.90 per 100 ml, the 500 ml at £6.39 per 100 ml, the 250 ml at £8.78 per 100 ml and the 75 ml at £14.60 per 100 ml. The 75 ml is the one for hand luggage and gym bags.

Freeze and Shine or Super Clean Extra: which should I choose?

Both are maximum-hold finishing sprays. Freeze and Shine is a non-aerosol spray with a high shine that suits thick or coarse hair, while Super Clean Extra comes in an aerosol can and feels lighter on the hair. For fine hair that needs volume as well as hold, choose Extra Body Firm Hairspray.
