Paul Mitchell for Frizz: Super Skinny Serum vs Smoothing Serum vs Gloss Drops

For most frizz, start with Super Skinny Serum: one pump on damp hair before blow-drying. Choose Smoothing Serum if you want fragrance-free, Gloss Drops for a high-shine finish on medium to coarse hair, and Relaxing Balm or Lavender Mint Taming Cream for thick, curly or textured hair.

Super Skinny Serum vs Smoothing Serum: closer than you'd think

Compare the ingredient lists on Paul Mitchell UK and both are built on the same three ingredients: isododecane, dimethicone and dimethiconol. Dimethicone and dimethiconol are silicones that coat the hair and smooth the cuticle, and isododecane is a light carrier that evaporates. Paul Mitchell describes both as blow-dry primers that help hair dry faster.

The differences Paul Mitchell gives are these. Super Skinny Serum adds fragrance (apple, berries and sweet florals), and Paul Mitchell's US site states heat protection up to 232°C (450°F, based on third-party testing). Smoothing Serum is from the Clear range for people with sensitivities: just those three ingredients, no fragrance or dyes, and dermatologist-tested. Paul Mitchell makes no heat-protection claim for it. So if you love a scent and use hot tools, choose Super Skinny. If fragrance bothers your skin, choose Smoothing Serum.

Both are very concentrated. Start with one pump, rubbed between your palms, through the mid-lengths and ends of damp hair. Too much is the usual reason people say a serum made their hair lank.

Gloss Drops: the shine finisher

Gloss Drops do a different job. Alongside silicones they contain plant-derived squalane and an olive-derived emollient, and Paul Mitchell UK lists them for coarse hair. Used before blow-drying, Paul Mitchell UK says they also help protect from heat. Rub one to three drops between your palms and smooth over dry hair to finish, focusing on the ends. On very thick or coarse hair you can also use them on damp hair before blow-drying. On fine hair, one drop is plenty.

For thick, curly or textured hair

If a serum alone doesn't hold your hair smooth, you need more slip and weight. Super Skinny Relaxing Balm is for wavy, curly, coarse or textured hair that you blow-dry sleek: two to four pumps through damp hair, then dry. If you'd rather wear your curls, Tea Tree Lavender Mint Taming Cream shapes and smooths for air-drying or diffusing. Clean Beauty Anti-Frizz Leave-In Treatment is a rich leave-in cream for textured hair that helps against humidity.

Where Taming Spray fits

To be honest, Taming Spray isn't a heavy-duty frizz fighter. It's a light spray that helps a comb slide through and calms static and flyaways, on damp or dry hair. On its US site, Paul Mitchell describes it as a taming spray for kids, and it's a good one for school-morning tangles. For real frizz, use a serum.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Paul Mitchell product for frizz?

For most hair, Super Skinny Serum: one pump through damp hair before blow-drying. Choose Gloss Drops for shine on medium to coarse hair, and Super Skinny Relaxing Balm for thick, curly or textured hair you want sleek.

What's the difference between Super Skinny Serum and Smoothing Serum?

Both are built on the same three base ingredients. Super Skinny Serum adds fragrance and Paul Mitchell states heat protection up to 232°C; Smoothing Serum is fragrance-free and dye-free, from the Clear range for people with sensitivities.

Do you put Paul Mitchell serum on wet or dry hair?

Both work. On damp hair before blow-drying it smooths and speeds up drying; a tiny amount on dry hair tames flyaways and adds shine. Keep it to the mid-lengths and ends.

Are Gloss Drops the same as Super Skinny Serum?

No. Gloss Drops are a concentrated shine serum with added squalane and an olive-derived emollient, made for medium to coarse hair and mostly used on dry hair to finish. Super Skinny Serum is a lighter blow-dry primer that suits fine hair too.

Is Super Skinny Serum discontinued?

No. Paul Mitchell UK lists it in 25 ml, 150 ml and 250 ml (checked 18 October 2026). In the US, Paul Mitchell now calls its Smooth range "Anti-Frizz", with the same smoothing power under the new name, so US listings may show different packaging.

Is Super Skinny Serum good for fine hair?

Yes. Paul Mitchell says it suits all hair types, including fine hair. Use one pump or less, on the ends only.
