Every week someone asks me at the backwash: "Mel, why is your shampoo bottle the size of a fire extinguisher?" Fair question. Salons buy in litres because we get through product fast — and because, per ml, it's simply the sensible way to buy. The good news is you can do exactly the same. What "salon size" actually means
Most of the core Paul Mitchell lines run in four sizes: a 75ml travel bottle, a 300ml retail bottle, a 500ml, and the 1000ml litre — the same bottle sitting on our backwash shelf. It's the identical formula at every size; the only thing that changes is how much you pay per ml. The litre is the salon workhorse: it's what we use on clients all day, every day, because it costs the least per wash.
The per-ml maths, with real numbers
These are our live prices at the time of writing, so you can check my sums:
- Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two — the 300ml is £16.45, which works out around 5.5p per ml. The 1000ml is £37.95, about 3.8p per ml. That's roughly 30% less per wash. Put another way: three 300ml bottles would cost £49.35 for 900ml, while one litre gives you 1000ml for £37.95 — more shampoo, £11.40 back in your pocket.
- Paul Mitchell The Conditioner — £21.45 for 300ml (about 7.2p per ml) against £47.45 for the litre (about 4.7p per ml). Roughly a third less per ml.
- Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo — £22.45 for 300ml versus £51.45 for 1000ml. That's about 7.5p per ml down to about 5.1p — again just over 30% saved.
The pattern holds across almost the whole range: step up to the litre and the per-ml price drops by around a third. If a product is already part of your weekly routine, the smaller bottles are honestly just a more expensive way of buying the same thing.
Which favourites come in litres
Nearly all the classics do. Paul Mitchell Shampoo One — the gentle everyday cleanser, one of the three products the brand launched with back in 1980, and probably the bottle I've refilled most in my 35-plus years on the salon floor — is £37.95 in the litre. So is Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo, the original Hawaiian awapuhi formula — a moisturising classic for dry, frizzy or colour-treated hair. On the Tea Tree side, the Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo comes in a 1000ml too. Styling isn't left out either — Freeze and Shine Super Spray goes all the way up to a litre. What about gallon sizes?
Honest answer: gallons (3.78 litres) exist in the Paul Mitchell world, but they're really a salon backbar thing. We list one gallon size — the Freeze and Shine Super Spray Gallon — and at the time of writing it's out of stock, so I won't pretend otherwise. For home use I'd steer you to the litre anyway. A gallon of shampoo is heavy, awkward to pour, and takes most households years to finish; the litre gives you nearly all of the per-ml saving without needing a shelf reinforced for it.
Living with a litre bottle
A litre in the shower is a workout, so do what we do in the salon: keep the big bottle in the cupboard and decant into an empty 300ml bottle for daily use. Refill once a month and the litre stays clean, dry and upright between top-ups.

Yes, meaningfully. Shampoo Two works out about 5.5p per ml at 300ml and about 3.8p per ml at 1000ml — roughly 30% less. Most lines in the range show a similar gap between the retail bottle and the litre.

How long does a 1000ml bottle of shampoo last?
As a rough salon rule of thumb, a wash uses somewhere around 8–10ml, so a litre is in the region of 100 washes. Washing three times a week, that's the better part of eight months from one bottle.
