Tea Tree Special vs Lavender Mint vs Lemon Sage: Which One?

If I had a pound for every client who's stood at our retail shelf in Bridlington and asked, "What's the actual difference between all the green Tea Tree bottles?" — well, I'd have a very nice holiday fund. It's a fair question. Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree family is really three different ranges wearing similar packaging, and each one is built for a different head of hair.

We've been an authorised Paul Mitchell Signature Salon since 2006, and I've used all three ranges at the backwash for years. Here's how I explain them to clients — and how to pick the right one first time.

The quick answer

  • Tea Tree Special — the original. Deep cleanse, cooling tingle, scalp reset. The all-rounder.
  • Lavender Mint — calming moisture for dry, coarse, curly or generally stressed hair.
  • Lemon Sage — energising and thickening for fine or limp hair that falls flat by lunchtime.

Same tea tree backbone, three very different jobs. Let's take each in turn.

Tea Tree Special: the original tingle

This is the one most people mean when they say "the tingly Paul Mitchell shampoo". Tea Tree Special Shampoo blends tea tree oil, peppermint and lavender to lift product build-up and leave the scalp feeling genuinely refreshed — that unmistakable cool tingle you either love or quickly learn to love. The base is sulphate-free and paraben-free, so it cleans deeply without stripping, and it's safe on coloured hair and gentle enough for daily use.

Its partner, Tea Tree Special Conditioner, is deliberately lightweight — it adds slip and combability without weighing scalp-prone or fine hair down. Apply it mid-lengths to ends and skip the roots if you're prone to greasiness.

  • Best for: itchy, tight or oily-by-Wednesday scalps, gym-goers, product-heavy stylers, and anyone who wants that classic tingle.
  • Feel: cooling, clarifying, squeaky-fresh.
  • Sizes: from a 75ml try-me up to a full litre of the shampoo.

Lavender Mint: calming moisture

If Special is a cold shower, Lavender Mint is a warm bath. The whole Tea Tree Lavender Mint range is built around moisture: Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo uses monoi, pequi and jojoba oils to cleanse away build-up while feeding dry, coarse and curly hair the hydration it's crying out for. The tea tree, lavender and mint blend still refreshes — it's just softer about it.

The Tea Tree Lavender Mint Moisturizing Conditioner is the richest conditioner of the three ranges and a best-seller in our salon. It loosens tangles, calms frizz and finishes with a soft plumeria note that makes an evening wash feel like a proper wind-down.

  • Best for: dry, coarse, curly or thick hair; frizz-prone lengths; anyone whose hair (or head) feels stressed.
  • Feel: soothing, softening, gently minty rather than icy.
  • Sizes: 75ml, 300ml and 1000ml in both shampoo and conditioner.

Lemon Sage: energising thickening

The Tea Tree Lemon Sage range is the wake-up call of the family, and it's the one I reach for when a client has fine hair that goes limp no matter what they do. Tea Tree Lemon Sage Thickening Shampoo pairs tea tree, lemon, sage and peppermint with panthenol and volumising agents — it clears away the build-up that flattens fine hair, then adds body without any heaviness.

Follow with Tea Tree Lemon Sage Thickening Conditioner: light enough not to undo the shampoo's work, with panthenol to help improve elasticity and reduce breakage. Fine hair snaps easily; this helps it bend instead.

  • Best for: fine, limp or flat hair that needs visible body and a zingy morning start.
  • Feel: bright, citrussy, invigorating.
  • Sizes: 75ml, 300ml and 1000ml in both shampoo and conditioner.

Still torn? My salon-floor shortcut

Ask yourself what bothers you most at the mirror. If it's your scalp — itchy, oily, congested — go Special. If it's texture — dry, rough, frizzy — go Lavender Mint. If it's volume — flat, fine, lifeless — go Lemon Sage. And if you're genuinely between two, start with the 75ml sizes; they're proper travel-friendly bottles, not sachets, and they'll tell you everything within a fortnight of washes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special and Lavender Mint?

Tea Tree Special is a deep-cleansing, cooling range for scalp refreshment and build-up removal. Lavender Mint is a moisturising range for dry, coarse or curly hair — same tea tree base, but with monoi, pequi and jojoba oils for hydration and a much gentler, calmer feel.

Is Tea Tree Special Shampoo safe for coloured hair?

Yes. Tea Tree Special Shampoo has a sulphate-free, paraben-free base and is safe on coloured hair — it clarifies the scalp without stripping your colour. We use it on colour clients in the salon every week.

Which Paul Mitchell Tea Tree range is best for fine hair?

Lemon Sage. The Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner use panthenol and volumising agents to add visible body to fine or limp hair without weighing it down. Tea Tree Special Conditioner is also a good lightweight option if your main concern is an oily scalp rather than volume.
